Staying Active for Life
For seniors, regular activity is one of the keys to remaining physically and mentally healthy. Experts agree that being more active will help you to:
- Maintain your weight
- Strengthen your muscles and joints, and limit muscle loss
- Improve your energy and endurance
- Improve your balance and posture
- Strengthen your heart, lungs and circulatory system
- Reduce symptoms of pain or illness
- Improve your mood, thinking and sleep
- Cut your chances of developing certain health conditions, from arthritis to heart disease
- Stay healthier and independent longer
Sometimes, despite knowing all the benefits, it’s hard to get active. Maybe you don’t know where to start. In fact, it’s never too late to become more active. Before you start, be sure to talk to your doctor or health care professional. For some people, being active means going to an exercise class, for others it’s walking in the neighbourhood, and for still others it’s working in the garden. Anything that gets you moving can make you feel better – in mind, body and spirit.
