Launching The Senior Living CaRES Fund

Supporting frontline employees
By Tom Wellner
Across Canada, people working in the senior living sector are on the front line of the battle to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The Canadian public are seeing what Revera’s residents, their families and the entire Revera family has known all along: our employees are heroes. The strength and commitment demonstrated by our employees, and those of other operators, across the country inspired the establishment of the Senior Living CaRES Fund. CaRES is an acronym for the Fund’s four founding partners: Chartwell Retirement Residences, Revera Inc., Extendicare and Sienna Senior Living.

The CaRES Fund will provide emergency funding for employees impacted by the pandemic including personal support workers, nurses, dietary aides, and the recreation, environmental, culinary, administrative staff and all those who have been working tirelessly to support our residents and each other. All senior living employees across Canada, regardless of their employer, are invited and encouraged to apply.
“This initiative is just one way that we can honour the remarkable contributions of our front-line staff.”

The CaRES Fund will provide a one-time financial assistance grant of up to $10,000 to employees of Canadian senior living operators who work in the senior living sector. Applications will be reviewed through a blinded evaluation process by a committee made up of representatives of the Founding Members of The CaRES Fund. The blinded evaluation process means that the names of the applicants, name of the employer / employment letter and any other identifying information will be hidden from the review panel.

Across the country, we’ve seen the challenges workers in our field have had to overcome during the pandemic. This initiative is just one way that we can honour the remarkable contributions of our front-line staff. As Revera’s other CEO (Chief Elder Officer) Hazel McCallion says, “It’s been truly inspiring to witness the dedication, compassion, and selflessness of those working in Canada’s senior living sector. Their determination to do their best for the people in their care has been truly impressive.”

The pandemic will end and when that day comes, The CaRES Fund will continue its legacy to support employees and their families. As the initiatives grows, it will always be rooted in the history of this crisis so that Canadians never forget the heroic contributions of senior living sector employees.

Be well. Stay safe. Stay strong.
