Residents of Westney Gardens in Ajax and their guests prepare to watch the premiere of Living a Life of Purpose

Living a Life of Purpose

Westney Gardens residents lead the way
On June 20, more than 200 people gathered at Westney Gardens Retirement Residence in Ajax, Ontario to learn about Living a Life of Purpose. In the audience were former Toronto Maple Leafs Darryl Sittler and Ron Ellis, Revera’s two CEOs Tom Wellner and Chief Elder Officer Hazel McCallion, representatives from the Town of Ajax and more. They all came to see 10 new short films made by local youth who told the stories of how our residents find purpose and meaning in their lives.
“We have to set the example and put the road map in front of today’s youth so they know the directions to go in.”
The premiere of these films was part of the latest collaboration for the Reel Youth Age Is More Film Project and coincided with the launch of the Report on Aging: Living a Life of Purpose. Ten residents at Westney Gardens shared stories from their lives that highlighted how they lived a life of purpose, either by giving back to different charities or organizations, helping others, or overcoming social injustices that helped to make a better world.

Audience members were also treated to a special guest panel discussion featuring Darryl Sittler, Ron Ellis, Hazel McCallion and Revera’s Resident Innovation Ambassador Dennis Champ. The discussion revolved around how older adults can lead by example in showing the next generations the importance of giving back. “We have to set the example and put the road map in front of today’s youth so they know the directions to go in,” said Darryl Sittler.
